Fabrication and Physical Properties of Mo/Al$_2$O$_3$ Functionally Gradied Materials
ABSTRACT
Functionally gradied Mo/Al2O3 composites have been fabricated by hot pressing. Powder premixes of different mixing ratios were prepared by attrition milling for 25h. Green compacts were made by stacking 100Al2O3 80Al2O3-20Mo, 65Al2O3-35Mo, 50Al2O3-50Mo, 35Al2O3-65Mo, 20Al2O3-80Mo, and 100 Mo(vol%) layer in a graphite die and hot-pressing. Specimens were densified over 98% theoretical density. The microstructure changed stepwise from layer to layer ; vickers hardness decreased from 18Gpa of an Al2O3 layer to 3 GPa of a Mo layer. The fracture toughness measured by the notch-beam method depended on the notch depth. When the notch tip was in the first layer of 100Al2O3 KIc was 4.66 MPa1/2 On the other hand KIc increased to 6.16 MPa1/2 when the notch tip was introduced up to the second layer of 35Mo-65Al2O3 he thermal conductivity measured by the laser flash method decreased from 13.46$times$10-6 m2/s at room temperature to 6.99$times$10-6m2/s at 100$0^{circ}C$
