Energy Transfer Phenomena between $Nd_{3+}$ and $OH_-$ in PbO-$Bi_2O_3-Ga_2O_3$
ABSTRACT
Heavy Metal Oxide Glasses (HMOG) have been considered as one of the potential hosts for fiber -optic amplifiers and mid-IR lasers due to the low vibration al phonon energy. Effects of the spurious OH_ on the emission characteristics of Nd3+ -doped PbO-Bi2O3-Ga2O3 glasses were investigated. Analyses of the decay be-havior of 1.34${mu}{textrm}{m}$ fluorescence from the 4Fe3/2longrightarrow4I13/2 transition in Nd3+ suggested two different energy trans-fer mechanisms between Nd3+ and OH-. For a glass doped with low concentration (0.05wt%) of Nd2O3 the intensity of the emission followed by a non-exponential decaying behavior following the relationship of exp(t0.5) where t stands for a time scale. On the other hand an exponential behavior was dominant for the glasses containing more than 0.5wt% of Nd2O3. A direct energy transfer from Nd3+, OH- seemed to be responsible for the non-exponential decaying behavior and its rate constant was proportional to R-6 where R is the distance between Nd3+ and OH_ The critical transfer distance (Ro) was calculatedto be 0.464 nm Non-radiative decay in the glasses with high concentration (>0.5wt%) of Nd2O3 is mainly originated from the cross relaxation of 4Fe3/2longrightarrow4I13/2 : 4I15/2longrightarrow4I15/2 among the neighboring Nd3+
